Captain's Column - May - June 2008 *** Archive Page***
Welcome all fellow members
I Would just like to start by thanking everyone who nominated me as your new Senior men’s captain, I must say I never thought I would be once again taking over the reigns as I know that there are a lot of committed and talented individuals at the club who would also make good team captains.
However I consider this a great honour and privilege and look forward to the future because as with any organization it’s only as strong as its members allow.
To the unfamiliar faces who do not recognize or know me I was one of the founder members of the club when it was only called Loftus back in 1983 and have always held the club with great affection, however due to a young family and work commitments I fell away from the sport for several years only returning last year due to having to reduce my expanding waistline but my competitive edge has again shone through.
It has being a busy time since I was elected captain and congratulations must go to all who took part in the NYSD cross country league with the Senior men winning the league title for a third successive year. Our personal thanks to Andrew Pearson who successfully captained the team to a great 6 wins out of the 7 meetings before deciding to leave the club and join NYMAC and I would like this opportunity to thank Andy and wish him well at his new club. I know personally I’ll be seeing him often on the various start lines in the coming months
Well done also to our individual winners John Hunter, Lewis Rodgers, Brenda Hare who won their respective senior age group titles – Juniors also did well.
April was indeed a busy month especially with the road races season getting going and we quickly had success with Alec Duffield having a comfortable victory in the Coniston 14 winning by over three minutes in ( 1.14.15) and John Hunter winning the male vet 45s by a massive 8 minutes in ( 1.18.18 )
Others taking at this unusual distance included Rob 33rd ( 1.31.13 ) ,Neil 116th ( 1.37.31 ) with Claire and Adele also taking part as final preparations for London.
The London Marathon was blessed with good running conditions or at least until the rains came by which time our marathon heroes were well on their way ,congratulations must go to Joanne Abbott ( 3.19.11 ),Claire Fowler ( 3.23.31 ),James O’brian ( 3.40.14 ),Adele Thompson ( 3.48.06 )and also to Alistair Sutcliffe in ( 3.56.45).

Next in the series was the first one of three 5k’s and on a pleasant night
On Marske sea front we had myself, Dave Collett, Dave Horness, Darren ,Angharad and Julie all taking part.
We had good weather for last weeks Redcar Half marathon with only a stiff breeze at the start. Good times were recorded by most, John Hunter was once again in the prizes 10th overall in 1.12.20 I came home in 13th with a pleasing 1.14.57 ,Paul Wildmore having a solid run coming home in 1.23.55 ,Steve Mussett making his half marathon debut in 1.26.52 and Julia Jackson earning a good pb in 1.41.28.
Finally the Northern Runner Winter Fell Race series came to a end with the Guisbrough moors grueller and we had Series success with Dave Collett winning the over 45s category just ahead of his new club counterpart Mark Walker, other runners up prizes went to Dan Middlemass 2nd overall male –Well done Dan, Alan Howard in the vet 55 and an excellent 4th Place in the competitive over 40s for Rob Williamson.
